5 Things I Stopped Doing to Heal My Cortisol (And What I Did Instead)

Beach-inspire graphic promoting a blog called "5 Things I Stopped Doing to Heal My Cortisol (And What I Did Instead)" about hormone balance, stress management, healthy habits and natural cortisol support.

If you've been feeling exhausted but wired, craving sugar by 3pm, struggling to lose weight or waking up feeling like you barely slept... your daily habits could be keeping your cortisol elevated.

When most women think about healing their hormones, they start searching for the perfect supplement.

I did too.

But the biggest improvements didn't come from buying another bottle of capsules.

They came from changing a handful of everyday habits that were keeping my nervous system stuck in survival mode.

Here are five things I stopped doing.

1. I stopped skipping meals

I used to think eating less would help me lose weight. Instead, I was constantly hungry, reaching for sugar in the afternoon and feeling completely wiped out by dinner.

When you regularly go long periods without eating, your body has to work harder to keep your blood sugar stable. One of the ways it does this is by increasing stress hormones like cortisol.

Now I prioritise balanced meals with plenty of protein, healthy fats and fibre every day.

My energy is steadier, my cravings are lower and I don't experience the same afternoon crash.

2. I stopped drinking coffee before eating

Coffee wasn't necessarily the problem, but drinking it on an empty stomach was (for me).

For many women already dealing with stress, poor sleep or blood sugar swings, this can make them feel even more anxious, shaky or wired.

Now I eat breakfast first and enjoy my coffee afterwards. It's a simple habit, but one that makes a noticeable difference to how I feel throughout the morning.

3. I stopped treating stress like it was normal

Being busy became my personality. I thought that constantly pushing myself meant that I was being productive.

In reality, I was never giving my nervous system permission to switch off. Now I intentionally build moments of recovery into my day.

That might be a walk by the beach, meditation (yes, I meditate now! With the help of binaural beats), reading a book, stretching or simply eating lunch away from my computer. Nutrition isn't the whole picture when it comes to healing hormones. Creating safety for your nervous system is just as important (in fact, I would say that this step must come BEFORE nutrition).

4. I stopped relying on snacks instead of real meals

A handful of crackers here, a protein bar there.... By dinner I'd barely eaten enough food to fuel my body properly!

Now I focus on proper meals that actually satisfy me. Getting enough protein, colourful vegetables and slow-release carbohydrates helps keep my energy far more stable than grazing all day. This honestly gave me the biggest leap forward in my healing journey.

5. I stopped chasing perfection

Yes, I was born with in-built perfectionist tendencies! I thought healing meant following the perfect diet every single day.

Instead, I learnt that consistency beats perfection every single time. One nourishing meal won't transform your hormones, but hundreds of nourishing choices over time absolutely can.

The Bottom Line

Healing cortisol is not going to occur from trying one magic food or supplement.

It's about creating daily habits that help your body feel safe. That's the most important piece of the puzzle.

Small choices really do add up. If you can eat enough food, prioritise protein, manage your stress, nourish yourself consistently and let go of perfectionist tendencies, you're already moving in the right direction.

Wondering if cortisol is really the issue?

If you're constantly tired but wired, craving sugar, waking around 3 am or feeling like you're stuck in survival mode, it can be hard to know what's actually driving your symptoms.
